In the more than two years since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the Gulf Coast, the systemic racial and economic inequities that place poor, the elderly, and communities of color at increased risk for displacement, hardship, injury, and even death have remained largely unaddressed. While many policymakers and the public have become somewhat removed and disenchanted with the plight of the region’s people, citizens of the region are still living with the impacts of the Hurricanes on a day-to-day basis.  In February 2007 the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation launched the Equity and Inclusion Campaign to confront these issues.

The Equity and Inclusion Campaign is a policy advocacy and public messaging campaign advocating for fulfillment of the federal commitment to confront persistent poverty and inequity during the Gulf Coast recovery. The Campaign draws together grassroots leaders from three affected states – Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama – with key strategic allies to combine their voices and coordinate their efforts to influence the U.S. Congress and the executive branch so that historically disenfranchised groups have the political resources necessary to improve their lives and rebuild communities.
